Captain's Corner

This edition of the newsletter includes important information regarding on-bike safety training, team rides/social events, tips for riding in cold weather, and upcoming rides.

Please refer to the Safety Corner for details and to sign-up for on-bike safety training.

Also, mark your calendars for the following team social events:

1. Team Shell Ride, Saturday February 28 at 8am, from Sun & Ski at Katy Mills.  This event will include food, refreshments, prizes, etc. Details will follow nearer time.

2. Team Shell coffee & bagel tent at the start of the following CP training rides:
    - January 31 at Katy Mills
    - February 14 at Sealy
    - April 4 at Columbus

Lastly, given the weather conditions in Houston at this time of the year, I am attaching to this e-mail a Word document that provides a few tips about riding in cold weather.  I hope you will find it useful.

CP Training Series

If you registered for the CP training series and are beginner rider, please don't miss the second beginner ride this Saturday, January 17 at 8 AM, from Brookshire to Monaville and back for a total of 22 miles.  For directions and additional ride details, click here.  This is again a short, slow and easy ride to help you get accustomed to riding safely and courteously in large groups.

Always check the CP website for up to date details about the CP series rides

If you have not signed up for the CP training series, this is the last reminder you will receive from us. So sign up now to avoid a price increase which will go into effect on Jan 18.

Team Shell is responsible for providing Rest-Stop and SAG volunteers for the following three CP training rides:

-     Sat, Feb 14 - Sealy

-     Sat, March 21 - Brookshire / Bellville

-     Sat, April 4 - Columbus

If you, a friend, or a family member are interested in volunteering, please e-mail us at ShellCyclingTeam@shell.com.

Safety Corner

The goal for Team Shell is to complete the 2009 MS150 training and Houston-to-Austin ride with Zero Incidents. Towards this goal, all riders on Team Shell must meet the following two safety requirements:

Requirement 1:  Every rider must have completed at least one on-bike safety training class since January 1, 2006. Riders residing more than 75 miles outside Downtown Houston may watch this online Safety Video as a substitute.

The following on-bike safety training  classes will be offered for free by Team Shell at the Shell Woodcreek facility at I-10 and Dairy Ashford:

To sign up for a training class, click here.

If you require training and you're unable to make one of these dates, similar classes will be offered by the MS Society and local bike shops, albeit for a small fee.  We will keep you informed of such opportunities when dates/locations are announced.

Requirement 2:  Every rider must complete the National MS Society's online safety quiz. The link to the quiz will be announced as soon as it's made available.

Our goal is to achieve 100% compliance.  We're counting on you to do your part.

Fundraising

Team Shell is a proud supporter of the National MS Society and its Lone Star Chapter.  Although you pledged to raise a minimum of $400/rider when you registered for the ride, Team Shell urges all its members to beat our 2008 average of $856/rider!  So it's time to get your fundraising campaign underway, don't wait until the last minute.
