Captain's Corner

Greetings and best wishes for the New Year!

A couple of thoughts on my mind today:

1) The 2009 MS150 training season is officially underway. Whether you're training with the CP Series or on your own, it's time to get out and start riding.  For now, you should be focusing on safe group riding, saddle time, and building endurance. Speed and hills will come in a few weeks.

2) In December, we introduced a new mentoring program. If you're a new cyclist seeking a mentor or if you're experienced and willing to help a teammate, please click here to sign-up.

CP Training Series

If you are beginner rider, please don't miss the beginner ride this Saturday, January 10 at 8 AM.  It begins on the south side of Brookshire, click here for directions.  This is a 14-mile out and back to Fulshear.  The ride is short, slow and easy.  It focuses on safety, riding courteously in groups and gives you a chance to ask questions (like what have I gotten myself into).

Check the CP website frequently for up to date ride details.

If you are not able to make the beginner ride this weekend, there is a second beginner ride the following weekend.

If you have not signed up for the CP training series, time is running out.  A procrastinator fee was added on Jan 4, so the price is now $105. Sign up now before the price goes up again on Jan 18.

Team Shell is responsible for supporting the following three CP training rides:

-     Sat, Feb 14 - Sealy

-     Sat, March 21 - Brookshire / Bellville

-     Sat, April 4 - Columbus

We need to have 12 volunteers at each ride, for rest stops and SAG vehicles. SAG drivers will receive gas money.  If you, a friend, or a family member are interested in volunteering on one of these rides, please  e-mail us at ShellCyclingTeam@shell.com.  Note that you will earn volunteer credit even if you get someone else to volunteer in your place (e.g. spouse, kid, friend, etc). This is a great opportunity to let your family and/or friends see what you're doing every Saturday morning.

Safety Corner

The goal for Team Shell is to complete the 2009 MS150 training and Houston-to-Austin ride with Zero Incidents. Towards this goal, all riders on Team Shell must meet the following two safety requirements:

Requirement 1:  Every rider must have completed at least one on-bike safety training class since January 1, 2006. Riders residing more than 75 miles outside Downtown Houston may watch this online Safety Video as a substitute.

The dates for on-bike safety training which will be offered for free by Team Shell are as follows:

Location and registration details will follow shortly.  If you require training and you're unable to make one of these dates, similar classes will be offered by the MS Society and local bike shops, albeit for a small fee.  We will keep you informed of such opportunities when dates/locations are announced.

Requirement 2:  Every rider must complete the National MS Society's online safety quiz. The link to the quiz will be announced as soon as it's made available.

Our goal is to achieve 100% compliance.  We're counting on you to do your part.

Fundraising

Team Shell is a proud supporter of the National MS Society and its Lone Star Chapter.  Although you pledged to raise a minimum of $400/rider when you registered for the ride, Team Shell urges all its members to beat our 2008 average of $856/rider!  So it's time to get your fundraising campaign underway, don't wait until the last minute.
